Just south of Sandy Hook National Park along the Atlantic lies Highlands, NJ the beginning of the infamous Jersey Shore. Highlands, NJ itself is rather small only 1,369 square miles but has a population of about 5,000 and is less than 17 miles from our location.
The area was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 but with destruction comes rebirth and Highlands wasn’t about to wither away. A strong sense of community and pride brought this little area together to prove they can weather any storm.
Highlands has an interesting Native American heritage and was once heavily traveled by the Lenape and Algonquin tribes making their way along the Minisink Trail to fish at the Navesink.
My favorite spot in Highlands is the twin lights area, it's incredible.
